When I think about sustainable fashion, the first things that come to mind are eco-friendly materials, ethical production, and recycling. But sustainability doesn’t end after making a purchase.
At first, I thought Ask My Wardrobe would mainly help people make better decisions before buying. People can upload a photo of themselves and an item they’re considering to check whether it works with their style and current wardrobe.
But as I continued building the app, I noticed people kept creating different outfits with the same clothes. The outfit planner even became more popular than virtual try-on.
That made me realize that sustainable fashion isn’t only about how clothes are made, but also about making better use of what we already own.
Most of the time, we don’t lack clothes. We lack a clear way to see what we have and create better combinations.
Ask My Wardrobe can help us:
- Wear our clothes more often.
- Reduce impulsive buying and unnecessary returns.
- Reduce decision fatigue.
- Feel more confident.
This isn’t happening only with Ask My Wardrobe.
A 2025 study by Jiang and Macintyre analysed 27 wardrobe-management apps and 5,953 user reviews.
Around 8% of the reviews described reduced overconsumption or increased use of existing clothes. Another 3.5% mentioned greater mental clarity and reduced anxiety.
Sustainable fashion isn’t only about buying eco-friendly, recycled, or second-hand clothes. It also means using more of what we already have and checking whether something new actually works for us before buying it.
